Create beautiful, one-of-a-kind photography-based artworks that reflect the splendor of northern New Mexico while exploring Transfer and Emulsion Lift techniques using Fuji film, which is replacing Polaroid film.
With the creative environment of the Ghost Ranch as the backdrop, you will be inspired to stretch your creative muscles as you compose lasting visuals of your experience. You will learn the exciting transfer techniques and transfer to watercolor paper. With your digital camera, you will have the opportunity to explore, photograph and collect small 3-D natural items and ephemera to be included in your Fuji Transfer Collages.
You will also experiment with several hand-coloring options to enhance your artwork. A handmade book will be created to encase your artworks. You will learn several binding techniques and choose the one you want for your book. For students of all levels. No darkroom experience or equipment needed. Prints will not damaged. Bring digital camera. Optional – bring your favorite 4X6 prints of Ghost Ranch or other favorite photos.

SALON DU FIT 5 at The Bath House Cultural Center

This is always a fun exhibit. It coincides with the Bath House Cultural Center's 10th Annual Festival of Independent Theatres (FIT). The artwork is hung salon style with chairs and sofas placed in conversational groupings throughout the gallery. The curator is Rita Barnard. More about the salon concept here.

Fierce Exhibit at 14th Street Gallery

The Fierce exhibit is the brainchild of J R Compton of DallasArtsRevue.com. To curate this exhibit he visited artist's studios and wrote about the visits here. Very interesting reading. J R visited with me during the North Dallas Artist Tour.

My artwork, Rock, was juried into the 2008 Edgy Photography Exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO. The juror was Michael Itkoff, an editorial and fine art photographer as well as a founding editor of Daylight Magazine. His Juror's Statement is here.
The exhibit runs through May 31, 2008 at the Center's new gallery in the Poudre River Arts Center. If you are in the area check it out. Or check out the exhibit online.

Polaroid Transfer Collages workshop at Ghost Ranch

I am teaching the Polaroid Transfer Collages workshop at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico again this summer, August 4-10, 2008. This workshop was such a blast. The students were incredible and created great artwork. The Ghost Ranch was so beautiful; it was just a fabulous week.

Artist In Residence

Usually, I am the one behind the lens. This month the tables were turned and I found myself in front of the lens! It was great fun though.

Robert Bunch photographed me for the Artist In Residence column in the Far North Dallas issue of the September 2007 Advocate Magazine, pages 8 & 9. Alyson Hall did a great job distilling everything I said into a great article.

But wait, there is more! Marlena Chavira-Medford, Editor of the Preston Hollow & Far North Dallas editions of the Advocate magazine, and Can Turkyilmaz, Photo Editor, came out and video taped me for the September Video of the Month. They were great to work with and made the interviews and photo shoots painless.

I am featured in the Member Profile column of the June 2007 issue of BrushStrokes, the newsletter of the Texas Visual Art Association (TVAA). The profile was written by Katrina Doran, who when she is not writing the Member Profile column, is a great Mosaicist and Sculptor. If you are traveling through the Denver International Airport(DIA) between May 25 and July 29, 2007, be sure to check out the exhibit in the A concourse and terminal galleries presented by The Center for Fine Art Photography. My digital collage, Wings, was juried into the exhibit that features 150 artworks chosen out of almost 4,000 submissions.

There is a cool short movie about the public art and exhibition spaces at DIA. According to the movie, DIA is one of the largest public art collections in one location in the country.

INTERNATIONAL FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
OPENS AT DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MAY 25 – JULY 29, 2007

A collection of international fine art photography is being exhibited at Denver International Airport (DIA) in the A concourse and terminal galleries beginning May 25, 2007. The Center for Fine Art Photography is presenting a unique showcase of 150 images from established and emerging photographers throughout the world. Varying from traditional black and white film to digitally altered creations, this remarkable exhibit features selected prints from almost 4,000 images that were submitted for this exhibition.

The DIA Invitational is the last of four exhibitions The Center for Fine Art Photography has displayed at DIA since September 2006. The exhibitions on Concourse A, C and in the Terminal Gallery are located on the mezzanine level. The galleries are open 24 hours a day. It is estimated that this exhibit will be viewed by thousands of people each day until the exhibit ends July 29.

The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, is located in the
Museum of Contemporary Art building in historic Old Town. The Center is a nonprofit arts organization that receives support from public and private donations, and sponsorships by Hewlett-Packard, Denver International Airport, Fine Print Imaging, and LifePics Professional Services.

My artist book, Trinity River, the View from Continental Viaduct, is included in the Focus on Book Arts Faculty and Staff Show at the Multnomah Art Center through June 6. The exhibit then moves to the
library on the Pacific University campus in Forest Grove on June 7 and remains open through the Focus on Book Arts conference. The conference ends Sunday, July 1, 2007.

Interpretations Exhibit at The Jung Center Gallery

The Jung Center Gallery is presenting my exhibit,
Interpretations, in the main gallery May 2-26, 2007. This exhibit features photographic transfers and lifts that are a fusion between photography and paintings. The use of glasses, goggles and lenses represent the filters each of us looks through as we interpret the surrounding world stimulate our imagination.

The side gallery will feature Beryl Striewski’s exhibit, Pop Archetypes. Beryl Striewski’s quirky portrayals bring to life various archetypes made popular by Carl Jung. Using friends as subjects, Beryl closely matches her friend’s personalities to typical archetypes for a more interesting and compelling interpretation of “the Portrait.”

The Artist Reception is Saturday, May 12, 2007, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Both Beryl and I will attend. I am looking forward to catching up with my Houston friends. If you are in Houston be sure to stop by for art and conversation.

The Jung Center is located in the museum district, next to the The Contemporary Arts Museum and across the street from The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

I am participating in the NORTH DALLAS ART STUDIO TOUR the last weekend of April. The tour features 28 artists in 15 studios working in photography, painting, sculpture, pottery, collage, metal art, mosaics, textiles and jewelry. A lot of very talented artists.

Digital Art Exhibition

Three of my digital artworks were juried into the Digital Art Exhibition presented by the Texas Visual Art Association.

Two of the artworks, Do Not Feed the Birds #1 & #2, were taken at Bachman Lake on the Northwest side of Love Field Airport in Dallas, Texas. There are large signs discouraging visitors from feeding the birds, as it is a danger to aircraft. People were everywhere with bags of stale bread feeding the birds and having a great time. One person bemoaned the fact that she had forgotten to bring some bread for the birds. No one even noticed the signs. Or maybe they were merely ignoring them.

inner walls exhibit

Whew, I am finally coming up for air! I have been working on my artwork for the exhibit “inner walls” that I am doing with Tuba Oztekin at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas, Texas. The exhibit will run from May 11 – 27, 2006. The Opening Reception is Sunday, May 14, 2006 from 6 – 8 pm.

It is an interesting exhibit. Both Tuba and I use symbolic and metaphorical imagery to show how people have different ways to see the world depending on their own life experiences, cultural differences, surrounding environments and other personal factors. Tuba uses a pinhole camera for her wonderful photographs. My work employs Polaroid Transfers and Emulsion Lifts.

Most of my pieces for this show are Emulsion Lifts. The thing that is so cool about Lifts is they are fluid on the page and really convey a feeling of movement. The artworks I created for this exhibit contain anywhere from 3 to 11 Lifts in each piece. It can be tricky having so many Lifts in each piece but they turned out great.

The artwork for this exhibit is from my optical series that uses glasses, goggles and lenses to represent the filters each of us looks through as we relate to the surrounding world -- the various ways we perceive and react.

Transfer Tuesday

This picturesque scene is on the grounds of the Ozark Folk Center . An inviting place to enjoy lunches during my workshop Garden Portraits: Polaroid Transfer Collages held at the center. The picture is a combination of a photograph of the bench and blooming tree with the real blooms from the tree. It was then made into an Emulsion Lift.

I was in the Ozarks at the break of spring to teach a workshop at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, AR. The trees were bare and only a few wild flowers had started to bloom. The first part of my trip was rainy and overcast. Exploring the surrounding woods when I could was incredible. I was amazed at all of mosses and lichens. Of course, I took lots of photos!
The last part of my trip the sun came out. It seemed like things bloomed overnight. Buds, small white and purple flowers started to show on the trees. Wildflowers were appearing everywhere. It was beautiful. I can only imagine how fabulous it will be when spring is in full bloom.
One late afternoon I was admiring a bluebird sitting in the tree. He was so blue - iridescent when the sun reflected off his feathers. His throat and chest were rust colored surrounding his white belly. He flew to the ground and just sat there for a while. Just as I took the photo he flew away.

Even the accommodations, the Dry Creek Lodge at The Ozark Folk Center, had great wooded views from every room. I had a chance to try some of the local cusine. My favorite was Tommy's Famous Pizza BBQ & Ribs. I tried the pizza and the BBQ. Yum!
